Personal Care vs. Companion Care: What's the Difference?

Families often hear the terms personal care and companion care used together, but they serve different purposes.

Companion Care Focuses On:

  • Social interaction

  • Transportation

  • Meal preparation

  • Light housekeeping

  • Errands

  • Companionship

Personal Care Includes:

  • Bathing assistance

  • Dressing assistance

  • Grooming

  • Toileting support

  • Mobility assistance

  • Transfers and positioning

Many seniors benefit from a combination of both services.

For example, a caregiver may help a client get dressed in the morning, prepare lunch, provide companionship, and assist with mobility throughout the day.

Understanding the difference helps families choose the right level of support for their loved one's needs.
